购物须知篇 1. carry (商店)备有(货物)
A: Can I help you find anything?
A: 我可以帮你找什么东西吗?
B: Yes. I'm looking for some IAMS dog biscuits for my dog.
B: 是的。 我在找 IAMS 牌的狗饼干给我的狗。
A: No, I'm sorry. But we don't carry that brand anymore.
A: 噢! 很抱歉。我们已经没卖这个牌的狗饼干了。
台湾来的我们, 通常容易犯的毛病是用中文直翻英文, 把这句话说成 "Do you have IAMS dog biscuits? "。 通常他们会明白你的意思。不过, 正确的说法是 "Do you carry IAMS dog biscuits?"
我想 IAMS 牌的狗饼干应该很好吃的。我的狗每天愿意乖乖地吃饭(狗食), 都是因为它知道饭吃完后就有一块「饼饼」 ^_^
2. Cash, check or charge? 付「现金」、「支票」还是「信用卡」?
A: How would you like to pay today? Cash, check or charge?
A: 请问您今天打算怎么付帐呢? 是现金、支票还是信用卡?
B: Charge, please.
B: 信用卡!
记得第一次被店员这样问时, 马上变成「小丸子」的脸, 不知道对方在说什么。
一般说来, 美国人似乎比较没有带太多「现金」的习惯。即使是在超市购物, 用「信用卡」(credit card)或「银行卡」(debit card)
3. get ripped off 被敲竹杠
A: You paid 50 bucks 2 for this? Man, you've got ripped off.
A: 你花了五十元买这个东西啊? 你被骗(敲竹杠)了!
B: How is that?
B: 怎么说呢?
"rip" 本身有「撕扯」的意思。如: "一He ripped the page out of the book. (他把那一页从书上撕下来。) "rip-off" 则是「敲竹杠」的名词。"That's a rip-off." (那是敲竹杠嘛!)
4. Grand 千元
A: How much are planning on selling your car for?
A: 你的车子打算卖多少钱啊?
B: Six grand.
B: 六千(美)元!
美语中除了用 "grand" 表示美金「千元」外, 还用 "buck 1" 来表示 "one dollar" (美金一元)。如 "I've got a few bucks on me if you need some gas money." 通常和美国同学出去, 如果是搭对方的车的话, 看到他需要加油, 能够帮忙分担油费是比较礼貌的。
5. fine print 细字印刷
A: Half-price computers? How do they do that?
A: 半价计算机? 怎么可能呢?
B: I don't know. Let's read the fine print.
B: 不知道。我们来看看那个所谓的「小字」吧!
在美国买东西或签合约, 仔细看看是不是有什么「隐藏的机关」是很重要的。有些商人为了促销, 喜欢用吸引人的广告词来「诱骗」一些大意的人。比如, 目前很多长途电话公司为了竞争, 往往在电视上大肆宣传所谓的「5分钱每分钟电话」。他们不告诉你的(却用很小的字印在屏幕下方), 可能是你所必须缴的每月基本费或所能享用该优惠的时段。所以.."Always READ the FINE PRINT."
