Violence erupted at Guantanamo Bay prison camp in Cuba today. Military officials say guards were moving some inmates 1 from the communal 2 section into the solitary 3 cells when the inmates resisted using improvised 4 weapons. The guards fired warning shots to put down the disturbance 5. Officials say there were major injuries. They say the guards acted against the detainees who had been hungry strike for more than two months and covered windows and surveillance cameras to block guard’s view.
The mother of a six-year-old killed in the Connecticut school shootings last year stepped in for President Obama during the weekly address. NPR’s Alison K reports she made a personal plea for law makers 6 to address gun violence.

She said since the 26 died at S elementary school, thousands of other Americans have died in gun violence and she pleads the Senate to take actions.

Secretary of State John Kerry is in Beijing, where he met with Chinese leaders. A major topic is the rising tensions on the Korea Peninsular because of war threats by North Korea. The U.S. wants China to pressure Pyongyang to scale back its rhetoric 10. After today’s meeting, officials from both sides said they pledged to work closely to resolve the situation and agreed the Korea Peninsular should be nuclear free.
Chinese officials today confirmed another case of bird flu, the first in the capital Beijing. The H7N9 virus already has infected dozens of others in eastern China. 11 people have died. Health experts say they believe people are becoming infected after contact with sick birds. Sick bird is no evidence that the virus is spread easily among people.
An Indonesian budget airline flight overshot the runway and plunged 11 into the ocean off the resort island Bali today. NPR’s A K reports nearly two dozens of passengers were hurt but no one died.
One passenger told the Jakarta Globe newspaper that the pilot on the air flight gave no warning as the Boeing 737 flew right over the runway and crash-landed 57 yards off the shore. Emergence 12 team rescued some passengers and at least one just swam ashore 13 himself. The flight with more than one hundred passengers on board was flying from the city B in Indonesia’s main island Java to D, Bali’s main city. M Air is expanding rapidly. In recent years, it has given both Boeing and Airbus their biggest purchase orders ever. But its poor safety record has led the European Union to ban M Air from European air space. In Cairo the retrial of the deposed 14 Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak ended shortly after it began today. The presiding judge recused himself. He did say why and referred the case to an appeals court to select replacement 15. Mubarak faces charges of complexity 16 in the death of more than 800 demonstrators during the protest that led to his ouster. His conviction last summer had been overturned.
A few hundred people showed up in London’s F Square today to celebrate the death of former British Prime Minister M Thatcher 17. Critics say her policies helped the rich at the expenses of trade unions and the middle class.
Two teams from Connecticut will face off tonight in the NCAA college championship for men’s hockey. From member station WSATU in Connecticut, Greg M reports the game is the first for both teams.
For the last 8 weeks, the No.1 college hockey team in the country has been Quinnipiac University in H Connecticut. Their hockey rivals in Division 1 championship are just about 10 miles away in New Haven 18 at Yale University. John N is the president of Quinnipiac.
