创建于1998年的AQUA合唱团由来自挪威的女主唱Leone Nystrom、DJ Rene Norren和Claus Noreen、Soren Rasted四位成员组成，他们造型定位鲜明，有着很强的卡通味道，老少皆宜。曲风则是以目前十分流行且上口的Techno舞曲为主。1996年的EP大碟〈MyohMy〉使他们一鸣惊人，而翌年的专辑〈Barbie Girl〉更令AQUA的卡通舞曲风潮席卷了欧美、日本和东南亚地区。
他们全欧冠军单曲〈Barbie Girl〉和〈Docotor Jones〉也迅速地在世界各地的舞池和大街小巷四处蔓延。随即，卡通舞曲的形式亦被许多新兴的舞曲组合和歌手们争相效仿。
继安徒生之后最成功的丹麦外销品恐怕就是AQUA（水叮当）了。他们首张专辑中的单曲"Barbie Girl"，"Dr. Jones"，"My Oh My"，"Turn Back Time"连获英国金榜冠军，尤其是"Barbie Girl"更是将AQUA塑造成乐团最具卡通个性的流行队伍。
他们2000的最新专辑水上乐园"AQUArius"触角深入了外层空间。与其说他们是在取悦大众，不如说他们是在自己玩着一种令旁观的人都留恋忘返的游戏。同年CCTV-MTV音乐盛典年度国际最佳组合为丹麦新生代舞曲组合AQUA（水叮当合唱团）。
1997年以舞曲《芭比娃娃》红透全世界、并造访过北京的丹麦四人团体“水叮当合唱团”（Aqua），他们在专属网站上对歌迷发表一份书面声明指出：“如今我们已经领悟到缺乏创作灵感的现实”。正式宣布解散，震惊乐迷乃至全世界乐坛。
声明中表示，这个4人团体将告别乐坛，可以预见未来将不会以该名字重返舞台。据悉，这4个人都决定将精力集中在各自的发展上。
“水叮当合唱团”发行的《水瓶座》《芭比娃娃》《琼斯博士》《超强泡泡》及《环游世界》等专辑及单曲在世界乐坛上均有出色表现，他们也是到目前为止最成功站上国际舞台的丹麦流行乐团，并重新开创了一个舞曲时代。
从1997年迄今，4年来这个团体创下了全球2800万张唱片销售纪录。他们在一起的5年里，水叮当已经成为了丹麦有史以来最成功的音乐组合，有多首歌曲在50个国家登上排行榜冠军。
