The title of world's fastest woman will be decided 1 Monday night at the World Athletics 2 Championships in Osaka, Japan. As VOA's David Byrd reports, the women's 100-meters race is just one of five gold medals up for grabs.
Lauryn Williams (1007) races with Bahamas' Timicka Clarke in a heat of the Women's 100m dash at the World Athletics Championships, 26 Aug 2007
The women's 100 meters highlights action Monday night, with defending champion Lauryn Williams of the United States hoping to claim another world crown.
After the quarterfinals, Williams says she is trying to stay relaxed.
"Whatever is going to happen is going to happen and the next morning - Tuesday morning I will still be Lauryn Williams and people will like me just because and not because of what happens in that 11 seconds, tomorrow night," she said.
To defend her title, Williams will have to beat an elite 3 field that includes former champion and countrywoman Torri Edwards of the United States, Olympic 200 meters champion Veronica Campbell of Jamaica, and 2005 world bronze medalist Christine Arron of France.
In addition to the women's 100, four other gold medals are up for grabs, including the men's 10,000 meters, the women's 3,000-meter steeplechase, the men's hammer throw and the men's triple jump.
