1. not only but also

not only but also 这个句型旨在强调but also后的内容。

1Space is a dangerous place, not only because of meteors but also because of rays from the sun and other stars. (CET4 1996.1  Passage One)

2. although

2 Although numerous books have been written about American mothers, only recently has literature focused on the role of a father. (CET4 1994.1  Passage Two)

3. not but

3The biggest safety threat facing airlines today may not be a terrorist with a gun, but the man with the portable computer in business class. (CET4 1999.6  Passage One)

    有时not也和rather连用,“not (but) rather”表示“不是…

4Since this concern about the decline and fall of the English language is not perceived as a generation phenomenon but rather as something new and peculiar 1 to today’s young people, it naturally follows that today’s English teachers cannot be doing their jobs. (CET4 1996.1  Passage Four)

4. while

5Some feel pride when they receive the news, while others worry, wondering whether they will be good fathers. (CET4 1994.1  Passage Two)

5. rather than

6The goal was to let farmers precisely 2 target pesticide 3 spraying rather than rain poison on a whole field, which invariably includes plants that don’t have pest problems. (CET4 1997.6  Passage Four)
