Lufthansa has canceled 876 flights scheduled for last Wednesday because of a planned strike by the German airline's pilots.

The airline said that roughly 100,000 passengers would be affected 1 by the cancellations, which include more than 50 intercontinental flights.

That walkout started at Duessseldorf and Hamburg airports at 5 am local time and is due to last until 8 pm.

Lufthansa's pilots say they have gone without a pay rise for more than five years. They are asking for an average annual increase of 3.7%.

They also claim that top company executives have seen their pay rise by as much as 30% in recent years, while board members have received even bigger hikes.
