MADRID, July 8 (Xinhua) -- The Spanish state-owned railway company Renfe Operadora presented on Monday a voluntary cost cutting program, aiming to cut 500 jobs from its workforce 1 of 14,900.
The unions and Renfe will start the negotiation 2 of the document, which initially 3 does not include any figures of compensations for those accepting the program.
One of the main Spanish unions, Comisiones Obreras, said the cost cutting program does not meet one of the union's requirements which is the replacement 4 of the workers, while Renfe says they will consider this option but it could affect the amount of compensation that will be on offer, adding that any replacement would be only implemented 5 in two areas related to travelers and workshops of the enterprise.
Renfe was founded in the 40s as a state-owned company and in 2005 it was divided into two different companies, namely "Renfe Operadora" and "ADIF", due to the European Union requirement of liberalizing the railway system.
Renfe Operadora is in charge of transport, while ADIF, which has around 14,300 workers and is expected to present another cost cutting program, is in charge of infrastructures 6.
Nowadays Spain's railway system is under a process of privatization that will consist of further dividing the company into four businesses, two of them in charge of passenger transport and goods and a third company renting trains to other enterprises.
