Brazil’s senate voted overwhelmingly on Wednesday to impeach 1 President Dilma Rousseff in a historic decision that ends nearly 14 years of rule by her leftwing Workers’ Party in Latin America’s largest country.

Fireworks were heard in S?o Paulo and senators who voted to remove Ms Rousseff broke out into the national anthem 2 after a fiery 3 final session in which the opposing sides denounced each other as scoundrels.
Of the 81-seat senate, 61 voted in favour of impeachment 4 and 20 against.
The ouster of the former Marxist guerrilla for manipulating the budget thrusts her replacement 5, interim 6 president Michel Temer, into the spotlight 7 at a time when the country is suffering what is expected to be its worst recession in over a century.
This is a historic moment but how it will look in history will clearly depend on what happens next, said Paulo Sotero, director of the Brazil Institute at the Washington DC-based Wilson Center of the impeachment vote.
The vote follows a gruelling nine-month process that has led to policy gridlock in one of the world’s largest emerging markets even as it wrestles 8 with soaring unemployment and growing public anger at its political classes.
Ms Rousseff’s Workers’ Party was credited with redistributing wealth to the poor in one of the world’s most unequal societies during its rule between 2003 and 2016, particularly under her predecessor 9 and mentor 10, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.
But Ms Rousseff’s increasingly interventionist state-led policies helped spark a crisis of confidence among investors 11 while her popularity was undermined by a sweeping 12 corruption 13 scandal at state-run oil company Petrobras.
