BUENOS AIRES, July 1 (Xinhua) -- Argentina has ratified 1 its commitment to the peaceful use of nuclear energy, the Foreign Ministry 2 said in a statement Monday.
Argentina has a strong commitment to the implementation 3 of the "actions needed to avoid having civilian 4 nuclear energy be misused 5 for destructive and threatening objectives," Argentine Foreign Minister Hector Timerman pledged at an international meeting Monday.
The meeting was held by the International Atomic Energy Agency at its headquarters in Vienna, Austria.
Argentina is among the "peace-loving nations," Timerman said. "We know the use of nuclear technologies, especially the full cycle of nuclear fuel, requires not just scientific and technological 6 excellence 7, but also enormous supervision 8 and responsibility in the handling of nuclear materials."
The top Argentine diplomat 9 also referred to nuclear terrorism and the physical protection of nuclear materials, saying that countries like Argentina "cannot remain silent to the anachronistic 10 existence of nuclear weapons and the danger they represent."
