 在古代军事上,有很多办法可以鼓舞士气、打击敌人,不过有一招义无反顾的计策就是“破釜沉舟”,有与敌人决一死战的决心。 英语中,burn your bridges behind you 的意思就是做了无法改变的决定,下决心为自己的决定负责,其内涵与汉语里的“破釜沉舟”颇有异曲同工之妙。这个用法最初起源于凯撒大帝,为了鼓舞战士们的士气,表明不走回头路、与敌人决一死战的决心,他烧掉了部队刚刚走过的桥,并且也不给敌人留下过桥的机会。


从此以后,这个习语就有了“破釜沉舟”,“不留后路”的意义,比如说:To move forward, burn your bridges behind you so you can't go backward. (要前进,你必须破釜沉舟,不留后路。)
值得一提的是,英语中表达类似含义的说法还有很多,比如还有“The die is cast”。
