Belgium has unveiled its new zero-emissions polar base. The energy self-sufficient station will be a model for future research stations.
The "Princess Elisabeth" station was inaugurated in a Brussels warehouse 1 by Crown Prince Philippe. The station is to be used to study the climate changes in South Pole with the least possible impact on the terrain 2. Solar panels and large wind turbines will provide the energy sources.
The station will be taken apart and transported by ship to the South Pole later this month. The Belgian government has decided 3 to consider China as a partner for future scientific Antarctic exploration and research.
