成功秘诀:“Go the extra mile!”
刚参加工作时,曾向年长的朋友取经,她只告诉我“Go the extra mile!” 彼时不懂,暗笑:“太简单了吧?成功就是‘比别人多做一点点’?” 时钟嘀嗒,在随后的日子里,终于明白,“舍去只做‘分内’,选取‘多做一点’,竟会让工作与众不同!”
片语“to go the extra mile”源出《圣经·马太福音》第五章“山顶布道”,耶稣劝告门徒:“Whosoever shall compel thee to go a mile, go with him twain.”(有人强逼你走一里路,你就同他走二里。)当时,以色列人被罗马统治,只要罗马士兵下令,以色列人就必须给罗马人抬着东西走一英里。针对这种情况,耶稣发表了上述言语,劝诫众人要忍辱、行善,甚至是用爱来回应敌人的恨。 如今,“to go the extra mile”的宗教意义已渐行渐远,现常用来形容“除了份内活儿,还干额外的事。” 看下面两个例句: It wasn't the fact that the man was an extraordinary stenographer 1 that got her attention.
