Chapter 1 OneThe airhostess smiled, “Welcome aboard 2, Sir. Would 3 you like a newspaper?”

“Yes, please.” Carl took 4 the newspaper and looked at his ticket. “I am in seat 5 five, where is that?”

“It’s near the front of plane, Sir, on the left there, by the window.”

“I see. Thank you very much.” Carl smiled back at the airhostess. “She was 6 young and pretty, just like my daughter.” He thought 7.

He put his bag under his seat and sat 8 down. His friend, Harold, sat beside him. They watched the other passengers 9 coming onto 10 the plane. Harold looked at his watch. “Nine Thirty P.M.,” he said 11, “We are on time.”

Carl agreed 12, “And in three hours we’ll be home.”He said, “That’s good. We’ve been away for a long time. You’ll be pleased 13 to see your family, won’t you, Harold?”

Harold smiled, “Yes, I will. Have you seen 14 this?” He opened his bag and took out two small planes. “These are for my sons. I always bring something back for them.”

“How old are your sons?” Carl asked.

“Five and almost 15 seven, the older one has a birthday tomorrow. He’ll be very excited 16 tonight then.”

“Yes, I hope 17 he’ll get some sleep.”

The plane took off 18. Carl watched the lights of the airport grew smaller below 19 them. Then the plane flew 20 above the clouds, and he could 21 see the moon and the stars and the night sky. He lay 22 back in his seat and closed 23 his eyes.
