Jude Law’s Interview
Q: I know it took the director Kerry Conran six years from start to finish to get Sky Captain finished, but for you, how long were you involved in it?
Jude Law: I first got involved probably eighteen months before we started shooting. And that point -- you've probably heard this over and over again ? -- there was only six minutes of a trailer1, a teaser, an example of what Kerry wanted to do or could do. And there was this fantastic script which we proceeded to over the eighteen months tweak2 and polish and add to, especially around the dynamics 13 of the relationship between Polly and Joe. In figuring out how we were going to do this, we were trying to allow the actors to be as free as they could be within a structure that needed specific movements -- they needed specific shots fulfilled so that Kerry could go away in post? production and do what he needed. And we managed to kind of blend the best of both worlds. And then we shot for about seven weeks? Six weeks?
Q: Some might say Sky Captain is a send-up of early action films, but really it's homage 2. You guys really love this movie.
Law: We never wanted to send it up. To me, the key was always to pay homage to this genre 3 and pay homage to this period of uncynical4, straightforward 4 action/adventure. Rather than enforcing it with complexity 5 and seediness5. Instead of slipping into the world of debauchery6, we wanted to make something for kids that had a kind of straightforward, almost old fashioned feel to it. Along with the chases scenes and world domination and all that that kind of comes along with this science fiction genre. The main challenge was really walking that line.
Q: And you had quite a schedule too; things got really pressed toward the end.
Law: It was quite hard work toward the end because we were going at such an incredible pace. We were shooting like forty-five setups a day, which is about forty times more than you normally do. (Laughs)
Q: How did you come to be producer on the film and what did that entail 6?
Law: It was really just because of my involvement at such an early stage. Jon Avnet came to me with the tape and the script and I saw it as something that I'd always been kind of intrigued7 by. And at the same time I was sort of wary 8 of it because we were going to work so much with the blue screen. It seemed like if there was anything I could add to this or empower someone in order to realize this, then I wanted to be a part of that. I felt like I could add something to it. When it came down to the practicality of production, once we really nailed the script, to be honest I really enjoyed the opportunity to work with Jon because he's a superb producer and motivator and organizer.
Q: What was it about Kerry Conran that made you think he was the right man for the job? It seems like there was never any consideration to have a more experienced director steer 9 this film.
Law: Kerry came with incredible clarity and he had this vision that he wanted to share with us all. But he didn't come obviously with any experience. We really were relying on this guy to come up with the goods, and no one was questioning that because he was so clear. I was always like a translator at times between him and the crew.
Q: Do you think there might be a sequel then?
Law: We hope so. I hope so.
