Hello, everyone. From the CNN Center in Atlanta, I'm Catherine Callaway. Here are some of the headlines NOW IN THE NEWS.
A manhunt is underway in Indianapolis for a bank robber suspect who shot a pregnant bank teller 1. Police say she is in seriously critical condition after she was shot in the stomach. The woman is five months pregnant with twins. Police say the shooter got away with some money, but wouldn't say just how much. Schools in the area are under lockdown as a precaution.
Chicago police have issued an AMBER 2 Alert for these three missing children. They say 6-year-old Oscar Casanova, 7-year-old Karla Casanova and 11-year-old Fernando Casanova haven't been seen since Friday. Their mother, Sophia Garcia, was found dead with a plastic bag over her head Monday in her home on the city's northwest side. Investigators 3 say they are looking for this man, the father of two of the children, 32-year-old Benito Casanova. He hasn't been charged with any wrongdoing, but they do want to speak with him.
Four million Pennsylvanians have their chance to weigh in on the Democratic presidential campaign today. The state's Democratic primary could put Senator Hillary Clinton into contention 4, or could all but assure Senator Barack Obama will win the nomination 5. Poll(s) show Hillary Clinton ahead of Barack Obama there, but Obama leads overall in the delegate count and popular vote.
Both Democratic presidential candidates have said that if elected they would threaten to pull out of the North American Free Trade Agreement. Yet President Bush is promoting NAFTA as he wraps up a two-day summit with the leaders of Canada and Mexico in New Orleans. He says trade's tripled since the three countries struck the deal 14 years ago. The president also says that the current economic slump 6 makes this the wrong time to endanger the jobs that NAFTA created.
And on this Earth Day, Washington is calling for more fuel-efficient cars and trucks. The standards would require new vehicles to average 31.6 miles per gallon by the year 2015. A new energy law calls for the fleet wide average of new cars and trucks to reach 35 miles per gallon by the year 2020. The current rule calls for 27.5 miles per gallon for cars. SUVs, pickup 7 trucks and vans need to get 22.5 miles per gallon. Transportation Secretary Mary Peters announced this proposal which is expected to be finalized 8 before President Bush leaves office.
