Hello, I'm Naamua Delaney at the CNN Center in Atlanta. And here's a look at what's happening NOW IN THE NEWS.
With the Democrats 1 wrapping up their convention tonight, attention is already beginning to turn to the Republicans. Specifically, who Senator John McCain will choose as a running-mate? McCain told KDKA radio this morning that he hasn't decided 2. But, several sources tell CNN he has settled on the choice and barring a last-minute hitch 3 plans to officially make his choice later today and introduce him or her tomorrow at a big rally in Ohio. Those thought to be on his short list are former presidential candidate Mitt 4 Romney, and Minnesota Governor Tim Pawlenty.
Gustav is now a tropical storm, but is on the verge 5 of becoming a hurricane again. The system is stirring up the Caribbean, and forecast to make landfall in the US between the Florida Panhandle and Texas, probably during the holiday weekend. The storm is blamed for 22 deaths. It's expected to fuel up on the Gulf 6 of Mexico's warm waters, and threaten the Gulf Coast as a Category-Three hurricane.
Northeastern India is enduring its worst flooding in fifty years. The Kosi River overflowed 7 its banks because of heavy monsoon 8 rains. Heavy rainfall is forecast for the next two days, and officials worry the situation will get much worse. More than 2. 7 million people in 1600 villages have been affected 9. Thousands of them marooned 10 on tiny strips of dry land. Indians call the waterway "the river of sorrow".
Russian President Dmitry Medvedev did not get what he was looking for today in Tajikistan. He asked China and other members of an Asian security alliance to support Moscow's recognition of independence for Georgia's breakaway provinces, Abkhazia and South Ossetia. The group condemned 11 the use of force, and said every country's territorial 12 integrity should be respected.
Well, what the high gas prices have to do with a bottle of tequila? Well, while tourists drink up, many Mexican farmers are abandoning their agave fields, and growing corn for ethanol instead. There's more money in it. And as more farmers cash in on corn, tequila prices could rise, making it more expensive to hang out in Margaretville.
Well, those are the headlines this hour. Do stay with CNN, for more on these stories and the other news of the day.
