Merck of Germany announced plans to buy Swiss Pharmaceutical 1 company Serono for 10.6 billion euros. Earlier this year Merck failed to acquire German competitor Schering, and recently pharmaceutical companies such as GlaxoSmithKline and Novartis had decided 2 not to buy Serono, which has been available for sale since spring of this year. Acquiring Serono instead of Schering will give Merck greater strength in biotechnology, letting them move more quickly into the growing field of biopharmaceuticals.
