His friends and family call him "Big Feng" because he is very tall and played basketball as 1 a young man. But he is also big in a different way- he fights 2 hard to protect 3 China's past. His real 4 name is Feng Jicai and he has written many novels 5 about life 6 in China. Several 7 years ago, however 8, he put down his pen for a while 9 and began to protect the cultural 10 relics 11 in Tianjin, where he lives. Once someone 12 asked him why he no longer wrote 13. He replied 14 that at the moment he felt protecting 15 cultural relics was 16 more important 17.

Feng loves his hometown 18. He believes 19 that old things must be given 20 a place next to new things, or people will soon forget their great past. He does not make speeches 21 to get others 22 to help him in his projects 24. Instead 25 he goes out and does what he can himself 26. If others follow him, so much the better. One of his biggest projects was to protect the oldest street in Tianjin. Along 27 that street some shops had 28 done business 29 for seven hundred years. Although 30 the city government 31 rebuilt 32 this street, they did 34 save 35 its oldest building. Another project 23 was more successful 36: he persuaded 37 the city government to buy some land 38 in the centre 39 of the city so it could 40 not be sold 41 for businesses 42. This area 43 is very important for the history of Tianjin. It was here that the city was first built 33 during 44 the Song Dynasty 45. Later 46 many treasures 47 were found 48 here.

To Feng, digging 49 down into the earth 50 is like reading 51 page after page of a book. Each dynasty found in the earth is like an interesting story. Not long ago he and other writers 52 and artists 53 took 54 photos of the old parts 55 of Tianjin. The photos were put into a book which was very popular 56. The money from the book helps his projects. Once, an old man asked Feng to sign the book for him, saying 57 he would 58 give it to his grandson 59 who was not yet 60 born 61. Feng was glad to do it - he knows that the past is not only for us to enjoy but also for the children of the future 62.
