(妥瑞氏症让Brad 的求职之路异常艰辛,但他从没想过放弃)
Interviewer: Sorry about the air conditioning(空调). Supposed to already be fixed 1 by now.
Brad: That’s all right.
Interviewer: [翻看简历]Well, your...your resume looks okay. And we do have an opening(职务空缺) in fifth grade.
Brad: [高兴] OK.
Interviewer: [冷淡] But I do have to tell you: this is a tough(艰苦的) place to work. We’ve got some really hard cases(棘手问题).
Brad: Well, I take that as a challenge. I don’t believe that any kid is hopeless. You know, they all want to learn; you can’t ever give up. Let me just...You gotta find the right way to teach them...
Interviewer: [开始注意到Brad的妥瑞氏症] Ah... You got something stuck in your throat(喉咙)? Would you like a drink?
Brad: I have Tourette Syndrome 2. I’d like to tell you about it.
Interviewer: Tourette’s? Isn’t that where you yell out obscenities(脏话)[ɔb'si:niti] ?
Brad: That’s coprolalia [kɔprə'leiljə] (秽语症), it’s , uh, it’s a rare symptom that a small percentage of people with Tourette’s have. I don’t have that...
Interviewer: [刻薄] Ok, listen, they did not tell me that you were gonna be handicapped (有生理缺陷的). How do you expect to handle a bunch of wild students with a handicap like that?
Brad: Well...by educating them. By letting them know it’s okay to talk about it. It’s okay to ask questions...
Interviewer: [粗鲁地打断] These students would laugh at you.
Brad: Uh...not...not when they understand. It’s simply a matter of...
Interviewer: Ok, I have seen teachers with disabilities before...but never with what you’ve got. [嘲讽] I just don’t see how you could ever teach a class.
Brad: [气愤] I can teach. Look at my resume. Look at it, OK? I was very successful as a student teacher. My Tourette’s never posed a problem! I can teach!
Interviewer: OK. [仍然瞧不起Brad] Bottom line: I need somebody now for the fifth grade. You want to teach here, you’re gonna have to refrain from(制止) making these noises in class.
Brad: [彻底被激怒,收了简历转身就走] You know what? Thank you very much for the interview.
Interviewer: [被震惊了] But, don’t you want the job?
Brad: Yes, actually. I want it really bad. But I would never, ever(永远不会) work for a man who doesn’t care about his students. So, I’ll take my portfolio 3 [pɔ:t'fəuljəu] (文件夹) and, uh, and take no more of your time.
