This is Scientific Americans 60-Second Science. I am Cendy Graber. It is will take just a minute.
Ancient Egyptian Mummies were carefully embalmed 1 and entomb with Golden jewelry 2 furniture and clothing. And to make sure they did not go hungry on their travels, they were also buried with mummified meat. King Tut was accompanied by 48 wooden cases that held a variety of cattle and poultry 3 joints 4 prepared for dinner. Archaeologists have known about this penchant 5 for after death munchies(小点心), but they didn't understand how the meat was treated. So researchers in Egypt and in the UK examined samples from both Cairo and British Museums. They extracted balm from meat samples and the wrappers(包装纸,封皮). The meat included beef ribs 7 and a calf 8(小牛) some 2000 years old. The wrapping contained fats that did not touch the calf, suggesting a balm applied 9 only to the wrap. The rib 6 dinner showed evidence of beeswax and Pistacia resin(树脂). The study was published in the Proceedings 10 of the national academy of Sciences. The scientists say their findings show the Ancient Egypt payed as much exquisite 11 attention to embalming 12 and preserving meat as they did to humans and pet animals. Because one should always peck a meal for a long journey.
Thanks for the minute.
