The Canadian City of Vancouver is set to deliver a formal apology later on this month for past discrimination against residents of Chinese heritage.
On April 22, Mayor Gregor Robertson will deliver the apology in Chinatown to acknowledge the wrongdoings of historical regulations and policies of previous city councils.
The apology will be delivered in both English and Chinese. The Mayor will read the English version, while the Chinese version will be delivered by former City Councillors Bill Yee and Maggie Ip.
The city barred Chinese residents from voting in local elections between 1886 and 1948. They were also not able to hold public office locally. A Chinese Head Tax was implemented 1, among other discriminatory policies that aimed to segregate 2 Chinese residents.
The planned move comes after Vancouver set up an advisory 3 group to help guide the development of a formal apology, which was approved by the City Council last November.
For more on this, CRI's Victor Ning earlier spoke 4 with Baldwin Wong, Social Planner with the City of Vancouver, who presented the findings of the group to the City Council last year.
