Today is Monday, January, 28th, 2013, a day immigration gets another look. For the first time ever, there is more political risk in opposing immigration reform than in supporting it. A day at the U.S housing market, signal is finally getting better. It's kind of a perfect strong of thing coming together to finally fix up markets, it's really been out of its need for four or five years. And a day Syrian rebels look to restore order. A court founded by rebels has imprisoned 1 rebels accused of committing war crimes. I'm Mitchell Tragen, and this is CNN radio news day.
First up today, a news conference on Capitol Hill that craft party lines and language barriers. That's Democratic senator Robert Menendez, pushing a new immigration proposal. CNN's Anne Lazy Borgo has the story.
Senator Charles Schumer to the podium in Washington today, he was there to unveil a new framework for immigration reform. But before the New York, Democrat 2 can get to the new, he had to address the odds 3.
"Other bipartisan groups of senators have stood in the same spot before, trumpeting 4 similar proposals, but we believe, this will be the year Congress finally gets it done."
To that end, Schumer and seven other senators from both sides of the aisle 5, the so-called game of eight, the put together what they call a framework for reform.
"Our framework contains four basic pillars."
First up.
"We created a tough but fair path to citizens."
Second.
"We reform our legal immigration system to better recognize the importance of characteristics that will help build the American economy and strengthen the American family."
Third, the group proposed toughening appointment verification.
And finally fourth.
"We establish an improve process for admitting future workers to serve our nation's workforce 6 needs. While simultaneously 7 protecting all workers."
Now if this press conference much was need about the bipartisan nature of this proposal. But already, there is a voice of objection on the right. Lamar Alexander is a representative from Texas and he called the measures aimlessly. For his part, House Speaker John Boehner struck a non-committal tone. Still, Schumer was optimistic.
"For the first time ever, there is more political risk in opposing immigration reform than in supporting it."
Speaking on ABC's this week, one of the so-called game of eight, Senator John McCain, he seemed to acknowledge as much.
"Look at the last election, at the last election, we are losing dramatically the Hispanic vote which we think should be ours for a variety of reasons, and we've got to understand that."
Even still, don't expect anything soon, the game of eight timetable calls for a vote in the Senate at around Spring or Summer. And if the measures pass that chamber 8, then all 435 members of the House will have their say.
I'm Louis Poto, CNN.
