This December 5,CNN STUDENT would like to remind you that Friday was awesome 1.I’m Carl Azuz at Atlanta,Georgia.
Our first story takes you to Pacific Island nation of Philippines.People there are bracing 2 for super-typhoon “Hagupit”,the word means a lush in Phillippino.Forecaster won’t sure where exactly it’ll go.Some think it will make a right turn and move north along the eastern Philippines.Others think it will hit the city of X over the weekend. We’ve mentioned that place before. When super-typhoon Haiyan hit X last year,it killed 6000 people and wiped out entire neighborhoods.Evacuations have started ahead of Hagupit. It has sustained winds over170 miles per hour. It’s the equivalent of a category five hurricane.
Unrest in New York,it’s in response to event involving 43 year-old Eric Gardner. This summer, police say he resisted arrest for illegally selling cigarettes. He’s been arrested for that before.Officer,Daniel Pantaleo, put Gardner in the chokehold as others helped arrest him.Gardner repeatedly said he couldn’t breathe, he died later on the way to the hospital.Police Union official says Gardner’s poor health caused his death. But a medical examiner ruled that Officer Pantaleo’s chokehold contributed to it.This came down to a grand jury.It had to decide whether the officer knew there was a substantial risk that Gardner would die from the chokehold. It decided 3 not to charge Officer Pantaleo, and the protest hit it up with demonstrators saying Pantaleo used excessive force.
“It’s a very painful day for some New Yorkers.” Arrests made throughout the night as outrage 4 pulls throughout city streets for more than nine hours. Most chanted Garner’s last words.Police, some in riot gear blocking intersections 5 as protests began shutting down the city’s most iconic landmarks 6, stopping the flow of traffic into and out of the island of Manhattan for hours. Some lying down right in the middle of the road, the same inside Crand Central Station. While other protesters staged massive dying as evening rush hour hit its peak.Police heavily guarding the Tree Lighting 7 Ceremony as protesters tried to disrupt the show. The city’s public outcry reach a fever pitch nationwide. From Los Angeles to Philadelphia, the demonstration 8 across the country disruptive, but peaceful, fulfilling Garner’s family wish. “You know we want to rally, but rally in peace.”
Officer Pantaleo said in a statement“it’s never my intention to harm anyone.I feel very bad about the death of Mr.Gardner.”
The next story today good news and bad news concerning flu.The good news the Center for Disease Control says flu activity across the US is pretty low.The bad news this year vaccine 9 isn’t particularly affective. The CDC says because the flu has mutated, when the vaccine was made the strings 10 of flu circulating around the globe were different than they are now,so why not just make a new vaccine. The CDC says it’s too late because that takes about four months to do.Officials are still recommending the vaccine now they say can reduce security of the virus if you get it.
