[02:00.87]At 50 I was the first woman to travel alone to the North Pole.

[02:07.53]But what should I do to celebrate my 60th birthday?

[02:13.09]What else,but a journey at the opposite end of the world,Antarctica.

[02:20.17]I began my almost 400-mile journey on November lst,1997.

[02:27.02]I walked and skied alone.

[02:30.99]My dog team were not with me to pull my sled.

[02:36.13]Another journey of challenge and danger was about to begin.

[02:42.19]The first days the weather was very good.

[02:47.16]The wind was icy but not very strong and there was bright sunshine 24 hours a day.

[02:56.72]But changes were just around the corner.

[03:01.47]On the third day I was struggling through stormy weather

[03:07.95]and during the next week the wind grew stronger

[03:14.01]and I found myself spending a whole day in my tent.

[03:19.94]I had travelled only two hours one day when the winds increased

[03:26.99]so much that I had to put my tent up before the winds became too strong.

[03:35.35]that threatened to blow me and my tent away,but none of that happened.

[03:47.92]On November 12th the storm died down.

[03:53.48]It was my birthday and I wanted to make that day special.

[03:59.86]I thawed 2 a frozen 3 cake over my fire,placed a candle on the top,

[04:07.72]lit it and sang"happy birthday to me"at the top of my voice.

[04:15.58]A few days later,I was moving forward over a slope that seemed safe

[04:23.31]when suddenly without warning my world dropped out from under my skis.

[04:31.15]I had fallen into a hole and was hanging on the ropes tied to the sled.

[04:38.70]A plece of ice fell down and I never heard it land.

[04:44.94]The bottom was a few hundred feet below.

[04:49.91]I used to practise self rescue many times in the mountains where I live

[04:56.57]and carefully began climbing out.

[05:01.11]It took a long time but I finally got out.

[05:07.49]I was thankful for all the training I had had.

[05:12.74]I was in good health and all of my equipment was working well.

[05:19.61]I was so optimistic that I decided 4 that the next day,

[05:26.37]the 22nd day of the expedition,I would increase my workday to 12 hours.

[05:35.62]The next morning I had a bad accident with the sled and hurt my leg.

[05:43.67]I coukdn't stand on my left leg and my head was woozy from hitting the ground.

[05:52.00]But I knew that I had to get up.

[05:56.36]Lying on the ice,I would soon dle.

[06:01.51]I struggled to my knees knowing that somehow I had to put my tent up for shelter.

[06:10.57]On hands and knees I got the tent up and dragged my sleeping bag into the tent

[06:19.82]and lay down out of the cold wind.

[19:41.07]She was born on January 29,1954 in a small village in America.

[19:52.78]For her family,life seemed to hold no promise.

[19:58.05]Being black and a woman made life even more difficult in America at that time.

[20:05.32]But there was nothing that could stop Oprah.

[20:09.47]She was an extremely bright girl at school.

[20:13.73]She asked her kindergarten teacher to let her go to school sooner

[20:19.19]and she alsoi skipped the second grade of primary school.

[20:24.23]Her life from the age of six till about fourteen was very hard.

[20:30.79]It was a time in which many sad things happened to her.

[20:36.06]For many women such hardship would be too heavy to bear.

[20:41.63]But not for Oprah.When she was fourteen,Oprah went to live with her father.

[20:48.29]Her father showed her how hard work and discipling could lead to self-improvement.

[20:58.81]and a few years later she won a college scholarship

[21:07.54]In 1971,she began working part-time on a radio programme.

[21:14.07]Two years later,after graduation,she started working for television.

[21:20.52]For more than ten years she worked for different TV stations across the country.

[21:31.75]where she became the host of a talk show called"AM Chicago".

[21:37.82]When Oprah started,"AM Chicago"had few listeners.
