1. President Obama presents his long-term deficit 1 reduction plan today. It includes $1.5 trillion in new taxes mainly on the wealthy. The plan is seen as having little chance of making it through Congress.
2. It's still the nation's deadliest air racing 2 disaster, but officials say the crash in Nevada that killed nine people and injured dozens could have been much worse. The plane's fuel did not catch fire, emergency workers had practiced for such a disaster, and the crash happened while Reno area hospitals were still fully 3 staffed with doctors.
3. Tens of thousands of people marching in Tokyo, they've called on Japan's government to abandon atomic energy in the wake of the Fukushima nuclear accident. The disaster, the worst nuclear accident since Chernobyl, was set off by the tsunami 4 and earthquake in March.
4. "Modern Family" snagged five awards, including a repeat win for Best Comedy Series at last night's Emmys. The Emmy for Best Drama Series went to "Mad Men", the series' fourth straight win in the category.
