[01:46.81]plastic bags,soda 2 bottles and other things are thrown everywhere.

[01:53.79]Many tourists also pick flowers and demadge the trees.

[01:59.54]And the many hotels in restaurants beening built

[02:04.19]are having a negative affect on the environment,too.

[02:09.36]READING ARE WE ENDANGERED

[02:22.32]Steve Jones is an environmental expert who tries to keep animals and plants

[02:29.58]from becoming endangered.

[02:32.95]"We are not alone in the world.

[02:36.60]We human beings could not survive without all the plants and animals around us.

[02:43.27]We often talk about how important it is to take good care of ourselves and our planet 3,

[02:50.03]but we don't always do as we say,"

[02:54.18]Steve says as he takes us on a tour of  Green Park in Birmingham.

[03:00.06]Many of the earth's plants and animals have already died out,

[03:05.70]and several other species 4 are endangered.

[03:10.07]If we want to live a better life and have a bright future,

[03:15.42]we must learn to act in ways that do not harm other living things.

[03:21.67]If we know more about what causes endangerment,

[03:26.32]we may be able to take measures before it is too late.

[03:31.67]A species can become endangered for different reasons.

[03:36.84]Animals and plants must have a habitat,or home,which is comfortable and clean,

[03:44.39]and where there is enough food and other resources.

[03:49.56]They are all used to their environment;

[03:53.33]that is,they have learnt how to live successfully in their habitat.

[03:59.49]When the habitat of a species is changed or destroyed,

[04:05.13]the animal or plant has to either adapt to the change or find a new home.

[04:12.00]If this is not possible,the species becomes endangered.

[04:17.65]If a new species arrives,the animals and plants of the habitat must change again.

[04:25.22]If the new species is too strong or uses too much of the resources in the hatitat,

[04:32.59]some of the original species may become endangered.

[04:37.73]A species may also die out

[04:41.97]if humans or other animals use too much of a plant or kill too many animals.

[04:49.52]The good news is that there is a lot we can do to help.

[04:55.16]First of all,we need to learn more about animals,plants and the environment.

[05:02.13]Experts tell us that we need to think about what we can do

[05:07.70]to keep animals and plants from becoming endangered.

[05:12.45]Steve says that we can help by creating more space for animals and plants:

[05:19.40]"You can plant a tree or build a birdhouse.It is simple but useful."

[05:25.85]Steve also wants us to think about what we do:

[05:30.42]"Please don't pollute the environment."

[05:34.08]If we find out more about what we should do,

[05:38.83]we can help Steve and others like him keep animals and plants

[05:44.76]and ourselves from becoming endangered.
