NATO says it’s still got a way to go before it approves a no-fly zone over Libya. Its defence ministers have been discussing the issue in Brussels. And while they haggle 1, the fighting in Libya intensifies 2. There are reports this morning that rebels are now fleeing the oil port of Ras Lanuf after coming under sustained attack from Colonel Gaddafi’s army.
Julia Gillard is denying there’s been a rift 3 between her and Kevin Rudd over a no-fly zone in Libya. The Prime Minister has been touring the New York Stock Exchange after meeting business leaders. She says she and her foreign minister are one on the issue.
A bitter fight is brewing 4 over the Gunns’ controversial pulp 5 mill proposal in northern Tasmania. The Federal Government has given the project the green light, subject to strict environmental safeguards. Green groups are vowing 6 to fight it all the way and are now planning a massive blockade.
There’s no sign of a let-up in the rain in far north Queensland. Roads have been cut and several towns have been isolated 7. Authorities say so far there’s been no need for evacuations. But the weather bureau is warning the rain will keep falling for several more days yet.
And Indonesia’s President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono was being accused of corruption 9 and abuse of power. Secret US diplomatic cables released by WikiLeaks say he personally intervened to influence judges and prosecutors 10 to protect corrupt 8 politicians. Fairfax newspapers is reporting they also show he used Indonesia’s intelligence service to spy on his political rivals.
