The Federal Government is about to do a deal with Papua New Guinea to reopen the Manus Island Detention 1 Centre. Australian authorities have already toured the site and PNG’s cabinet is likely to sign up on the deal today. The centre had been part of the Howard government’s so-called “Pacific Solution” that Labor 3 had promised not to revisit.
US President Barack Obama has marked the death of Osama Bin 2 Laden 4 by laying a wreath at the site of the September 11 attacks in New York. This is Mr Obama’s first visit to Ground Zero since becoming president. He also met relatives of the victims and police and firefighters.
Victoria’s racing 5 industry is investigating an accident at a jumps race meeting in the state’s west yesterday. Seven people had to be taken to hospital when a riderless horse jumped a fence and landed on them. Six out of the eight horses also fell during the race.
A relative of five family members bludgeoned to death in their Sydney home two years ago has faced court charged with their murders. Newsagent Min Lin, his wife, her sister and two other family members died in the attack. Mr Lin’s brother-in-law was arrested and charged yesterday. Police say he was motivated by money and jealousy 6.
A Senate inquiry 7 into bank competition will release its report today. The inquiry was set up in October after the Government unveiled its banking 8 reform package. The big banks, smaller lenders and regulators all gave evidence. The Australian Bankers’ Association says there’s already enough competition in the banking sector 9.
