The United Nations is warning of a possible resurgence 1 of the deadly bird flu virus. It's also warning a mutant strain of the virus that's resistant 2 to vaccines 3 could be spreading in Asia. It says it's appeared in Vietnam and China and now threatens other countries in the region such as Thailand, Malaysia and Cambodia.

The aftermath of Hurricane Irene is still being felt along the east coast of the United States. The death toll 4 has now reached at least 32 people. Large parts of the northeast are still underwater and millions of people are still without power. Most of the deaths were caused by falling trees, road accidents, or people being swept away by the floodwaters.

At least 23 people have died in mudslides in eastern Uganda. The slides were triggered by unseasonably heavy rain near the border with Kenya. The Red Cross says the mud engulfed 5 homes and buried entire families. Fifteen bodies were pulled from the rubble 6 in one village alone. Recent heavy rain has also caused flooding and displaced hundreds of people in the region.

Victoria's Parliament is rushing through tough new dog laws. It's all part of the State Government's crackdown on dangerous dogs after a four-year-old girl was mauled to death earlier this month. The new laws would give councils the power to destroy unregistered dogs that'd be deemed to be dangerous.

And ABC chopper pilot Gary Ticehurst will be remembered at a memorial service in Sydney today. He died along with journalist Paul Lockyer and cameraman John Bean when their helicopter crashed at Lake Eyre in South Australia 12 days ago. Memorial services have already been held for the other two men.
