Investigation 1 is underway into security at schools after the stabbing murder of a 12-year-old boy. Brisbane schoolboy Elliott Fletcher died yesterday after he was stabbed during a fight at St. Patrick’s College in Shorncliffe. A 13-year-old student is due to appear in the Brisbane Children’s Court today charged with his murder. A Mass will be held at the school this morning.
The Prime Minister Kevin Rudd’s popularity has slipped to a new low in the latest Newspoll. The poll in today’s Australian newspaper shows Mr. Rudd has dropped three points to 55%. Tony Abbott has gained one point with 27% support for him as preferred Prime Minister. But the Government still leads the Coalition 2 on a two-party preferred basis.
More than 18 people have been killed and more than 100 injured in a train collision in Belgium. The two trains collided in peak hour in Halle, southwest of Brussels. It’s believed one of the trains ignored a red light. But investigators 3 are trying to work out whether rail signals were working properly.
And Shane Watson has won the Allan Border Medal for Australian Cricketer of the Year. The all-rounder won cricket’s highest honor through a vote by his peers and umpires. Batsman Simon Katich took home the Test Player of the Year award.
