The head of Victoria's Bushfire Recovery and Reconstruction 1 Authority Christine Nixon has apologized for leaving the incident control centre on Black Saturday. In an open letter published in the Herald 2 Sun, the former Victorian police chief accepted that her decision to go out to dinner had upset people. Ms Nixon said she should have checked that warning systems were properly working before leaving, but said she felt there was nothing more she could have done by staying.


 


At least 40 people have been killed in fiery 3 anti-government protests in Kyrgyzstan. Security forces opened fire on demonstrators who stormed the state TV channel and government officers venting 4 their anger about corruption 5 and spiraling utility bills. There are now mixed reports about whether the opposition 6 has seized control of the country.


 


A boat carrying more than 100 asylum 7 seekers has been intercepted 8 off Broome in Western Australia. Officials say the boat came within 90 kilometers off the mainland coast. The group has been taken to Christmas Island’s detention 9 centre which is already holding more than its official capacity of 2040 people.


 


And Qantas has logged another aircraft problem. A plane from Sydney was about to land in Canberra yesterday when pilots experienced problems with a wing flap. They conducted safety checks and eventually landed safely.
