Qantas is promising 1 to cooperate with an investigation 2 into its safety practices. The Civil Aviation Safety Authority is stepping up surveillance of Qantas operations and conducting a detailed 3 review of its procedures. It follows two separate incidents, one in which a 747 had to return to Sydney following an engine surge and another in which an A380's brakes locked up and the tyres burst. That plane’s now back in the air. Qantas engineers have also complained that passengers have been put at risk by unsafe work practices. But the airline insists safety is the number one priority.
The Federal Opposition 4 says it's hopeful of convincing big business to recognize the benefits of its paid parental 5 leave scheme. It's asking for feedback on a 26-week plan and says it had some encouraging feedback despite criticism from the business lobby.
And the Internet company Google says its customers have been hacked 6 again in Asia, this time in Vietnam. Google says the malicious 7 software was used to spy on thousands of opponents of a bauxite 8 mining project in the Central Highlands.
To the markets now, and strong manufacturing data’s given Wall Street a lift for Dow put on 70 points. There were solid gains in Europe, too. The FTSE shot up 65. And the Australian dollar’s buying 92.1 US cents.
