Major floods are expected on the Yangtze River this year. In anticipation of that, the Three Gorges Reservoir is discharging water to make room for more when the flood season arrives.
22 reservoirs, including the Three Gorges now form a joint flood control system on the Yangtze River. Last week, 25,000 cubic meters of water per second were flowing into the Three Gorges reservoir, the highest rate since 1992.
In past two months, the reservoir has discharged some 22 billion cubic meters of water, lowering the water level of the reservoir has been lowered to 145 meters. This means that in the coming flood season, the reservoir can accommodate that same amount.
