China's renowned comic artist and illustrator, He Youzhi, has passed away at the age of 94, following a 50-year career that transformed the artform.

"Great Changes in a Mountain Village"
He started as a printer's apprentice and primary-school teacher. From 1946, he studied commercial art, and in 1949, started drawing comic strips. He illustrated many of China's favorite folktales and was revered for revealing character through his portrayals. Between 1952 and 1980, he created more than 30 comic books.
His best-known stories are "Chao Yang Gou", "Li Shuangshuang", and the influential "Great Changes in a Mountain Village". The latter is regarded as a milestone in China's comic development. From 1980 to '87, he was Professor of Pictorial Stories at the Central Art Academy.
