Ethiopia is the home of Arabica coffee. The country recently hosted the 4th World Coffee Conference, bringing together farmers, buyers, and policy makers. It was the first time the event was held on African soil.
Ethiopia coffee
Host nation Ethiopia is the world’s fifth-largest exporter of coffee. Ethiopia now wants to build on this success, aiming to become the second-largest producer and exporter of coffee in the world after Brazil.
Though Ethiopian coffee exports are on the rise, there are still challenges such as climate change and low global coffee prices. This could slow Ethiopia’s plans.
The much needed foreign currency for Ethiopia still comes from the export of coffee. And the nation earns more than 900 million dollars from the sector every year.
About half a trillion cups of coffee are drunk per year globally, and if you trace that number to Africa, you would find most of the coffee drinkers in Ethiopia. In the capital, Addis Ababa, coffee houses provide the nation’s own Arabica variety. So for Ethiopia, the domestic market is a major driver of demand.
