China has congratulated Htin Kyaw on being elected as the country's first civilian president in decades. Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Lu Kang says the two countries should strenghten their friendship by consolidating common interests and expanding socio-economic cooperation.
"We hope to enhance cooperation with Myanmar's new government. China will continue to uphold a friendly policy to Myanmar and support Myanmar's efforts in maintaining stability, boosting development and pushing forward its national reconciliation.We believe that with the efforts of both sides, the comprehensive strategic partnership will be further consolidated and strengthened," he said.
