Germany has lain claim to a huge collection of books and musical manuscripts left in Krakow inPoland by the Nazis 3. Hundreds of thousands of works including Beethoven, Bach and Mozartwere taken to a Polish castle during the war and left there. They are now in the University ofKrakow from where Steve Evens reports.
At the university library in Krakow in Poland, an assistant lovingly uncovers a book which ismore than 1000 years old. She places it reverently 4 on a table, handwritten in Latin. And it isbeautiful. But it's just one of more than 200,000 works hidden by the Nazis in Poland and whichGermany now wants back.
That situation is very impossible to happen. However, theoretically, if it happened, it will be a very weird 5 circumstance because we've been doing our best to maintain these books in even better condition. So we've done a lot to preserve them, to restore them to their original state.
It's not just the written word which is in the Polish collection, but musical scores written by the greatest German composers.
