   Good Ideas

What makes an idea a good idea?

Ben and his younger sister, Kate, were helping 1 their father in the kitchen. "Mom will be surprised when she comes home from work," said Ben.

"This was a great idea," said Ben's dad.

Soon they heard the slamming 2 of a car door. Kate turned to her left and raced to the back door. She saw her mother. In her nurse's uniform, walking toward 3 the house. "Welcome home, Mom," Ben said.

Kate exploded with the news. "We fixed 4 dinner! It wasn't even hard to do."

"What a wonderful surprise," said Mrs. Wilkins. "Whose idea was this?"

"We all thought of it," said Mr. Wilkins.

"I'm certainly glad you did," she said as she hugged her family and sat down at the table. Dad, Kate, and Ben continued fixing dinner as Mom sipped 5 her iced tea.

"Speaking of good ideas, how was your meeting for Just for Openers?" asked Mom.

"I'm really excited about the program this year. Ling was happy with many of our suggestions," Ben answered.

Kate stopped stirring 6 the chili 7. "Did you use my ideas about going to Disney World and the Baseball Hall of Fame?" she asked.

"Yes, I did. No one was surprised that the idea about the Hall of Fame was yours. Ling said that she thinks you enjoy baseball more than anyone in the Chicago," Ben said, faking a throw to Kate.

"Dinner is ready," announced Dad.

Everyone joined Mom at the table. "I've saved the best news for last," said Ben. Smiling. "I talked to Ling about going to Washington 8, D.C. to tape information for my first show. She thought it was a great idea. She's making plans for us to go before school starts. You're all invited to come along."

"I'll have to miss this trip, Ben. I don't think I should take time off right now. But Kate will be able to go since she is still on summer vacation," said Ben.

"Yes, and my school calendar is about the same as yours, so I'll be able to go with you and Kate," Dad said.

"Good ideas do run in this family," said Mom. "Now how about some more of that delicious chili?"
