China on Thursday urged the United States to abandon unilateralism and protectionism, and resort to dialogue and consultation 1 to handle disagreements.Gao Feng, spokesman with China's Ministry 2 of Commerce, made the remarks in the wake of the US decision to extend the period for public to comment on its tariffs 3 on Chinese goods from 30 days to 60 days.He said that China is always open for negotiations 4, but emphasized sticking to the principles of equality, constructiveness 5 and balance that need joint 6 efforts.The Trump 7 administration announced plans last Friday to hit China with up to 60 billion in new tariffs on Chinese imports. Hours later, China unveiled tariffs on 3 billion US dollars worth of US imports in response to steel and aluminum 8 duties ordered by Trump earlier this month.In the meantime, Premier 9 Li Keying said on Monday that China and the United States should maintain negotiations, and he reiterated 10 pledges to ease access for American businesses.Are the two sides any closer to reach a deal? Could a full-blown trade war be averted 11? What is behind the trade skirmishes between China and US?
