The One Belt One Road initiative is part of the drive for Chinese enterprises to go global. But the weak international economy has made the move difficult. CPPCC members are suggesting the central authorities help companies band together as they venture abroad.
In 2014, China became a capital exporting country. Government statistics say China’s actual foreign investment has surpassed the investment it has received. But this doesn’t mean China is a large force in terms of foreign investment.
Li Dongsheng, the chief executive officer of TCL group, one of China’s biggest electronic enterprises, says Chinese companies have a long way to go to build and improve their brand influences overseas.
“That is a long-lasting task which needs consistent support from the government. I suggest relevant government departments should work together with some industrial associations to grasp our development needs. Together they should negotiate with the countries along the One Belt One Road route, so as to make foreign markets more accessible for Chinese products and services," Li Dongsheng said.
This echoes the hopes Premier Li Keqiang declared last year while visiting Chinese enterprises in Chile. He says Chinese companies should unite, and help each other as they go global.
As a deputy of the National People's Congress, Li hopes the government can help enterprises through the initial stage of their international expansion.
“Starting an international branch can sometimes be a big burden for Chinese companies. So policies or financial support from the government or industrial associations become quite important in helping Chinese enterprises survive and grow overseas,” Li Dongsheng said.
