December 3rd, 1967Surgeons in Cape 1 Town, South Africa, led by Dr. Christiaan Barnard, perform the first human heart transplant, the patient Louis Washkansky lives 18 days with his new heart. 1984A horrific industrial accident kills thousands of people in Bhopal, India. That’s where a cloud of methyl isocyanate gas escapes from a pesticide 2 plant operated by a Union Carbide subsidiary. Investigators 3 later conclude operating and safety procedures at the understaffed plant caused the disaster.
