December 14th 1799George Washington, the Revolutionary War general who became America’s first president dies at his Mount Vernon estate in Virginia at age 67.
1911Norwegian explorer, Roald Amundsen and his group become the first men to reach the South Pole. They beat out the rival expedition led by Robert F. Scott by more than a month.
1995In Paris, leaders of Bosnia, Serbia and Croatia sign an internationally-brokered peace treaty. That move formally ends more than three and a half years’ bloodshed in the Balkans.
And 1985Baseball’s Roger Maris, whose single season homerun record , lasted more than thirty-five years, dies in Houston at age 51.
