Indonesia’s vice 1 president has accused Australia of paying bribes 2 over claims people smugglers were paid to turn back a boat to Indonesia. Jusuf Kalla has questioned Australia’s ethics 3 and is demanding a full explanation. Back home, the government is trying to deflect 4 criticism of refusal to confirm or deny the payments have been made.

An 11-year-old boy has died in an overnight house fire in Brisbane’s west. Firefighters dragged the child out of the burning building at Westlake. But he couldn’t be revived and died at the scene. The boy’s 44-year-old mother and two sisters, aged 6 13 and 10 managed to escape the blaze and were taken to hospital.
