   1、词根、词缀记忆法


  这是最基本也最有效的记忆方法,必须要掌握。举GRE中最臭名昭著的一个单词为例:arteriosclerosis。这个词让无数人口喷鲜血,但了解了词根,无非是arterio+sclero+sis,即动脉、硬化症,过目不忘。用词根记忆法,往往事半功倍,如carnivorous, herbivorous, omnivorous 1, 本来一个都记不住,放在一起,一目了然。而且以后记carnage, carnalism, herbaceous, herbiferous, omnicompetent, omnificent, omnipotent等,更是不费吹灰之力。
  2、形近词记忆法
  凭已知的来学习未知,会让人倍觉轻松。比如背一个生词marrow就不如记把narrow换一个字母来得省力省时。同样,smother这个词长得古怪,但记成s(死)+mother就很容易掌握。用这个方法,不仅能够更快地记忆单词,更重要的是使我们发现,即使是背单词这种无聊透顶的事,也可以做得趣味盎然。反正是要背,何不让自己轻松一点?再试试这几组:defer 2, deter 3blight 4, bright;vocation, avocation 5eminent 6, imminent;ally, rally, allay 7, alley 8, alloy 9
  3、分类记忆法
  很多时候,孤立地记一个事物,反而不如同时记忆多个同类效果来得好。所以把意义相近的词放在一起记,可以大大提高效率,更对日后实战时的类比题有着莫大的帮助。分类可有两种,一种是把同义词归纳在一起,如关于格言的:adage 10, proverb, allegory, fable 11, dictum, maxim 12, motto, aphorism 13。关于欺骗的:deceive, beguile 14, betray, inveigle 15, dupe, hoax 16, bamboozle 17, delude 18, hoodwink, defraud 19, swindle。另一种分类是把相关的单词归为一类,如关于宝石的:ruby 20, sapphire 21, emerald, jade 22, turquoise 23, amethyst 24, rhinestone 25, opal。关于植物的:oak, cypress 26, almond, maple 27, elm, elm, willow 28, cactus 29, vanilla 30, orchid 31, chrysanthemum 32, balsam。这种分类工作利用电子辞典来做最为方便。
  4、词源记忆法
  很多单词形状古怪,匪夷所思,让人一见之下就头晕目眩,昏倒在地。事实上这些词都有来历,一旦知道词源,不但可以记住单词,还可以开阔眼界,增长知识,真是寓教与乐了。如来自历史或文学作品人物的:epicure(伊璧鸠鲁),quixotic(唐吉诃德),machination(马基雅维里),mesmerism(梅斯美尔),odyssey(奥德赛)。又如来自神话的:hermetic(来自商业神赫尔墨斯),nemesis(来自复仇女神),siren(来自女妖塞壬),panic(来自恐慌之神潘)。
  5、译音记忆法
  其实第4类中的大部分单词都可以用译音法记忆。另一大类是现成的商标:如robust(乐百氏)canon(佳能)。另外还有一些词现在有对应的义译,但五四前后或港台的文章能用音译,用中文音来记英语单词,有点好笑,却能记得饶有兴致,不易忘却,如ultimatum(哀的美敦书),boycott(杯葛),carnival(嘉年华),bingo(宾果)bourgeois(布尔侨亚)等。
  6、生活记忆法
  现在我们的日常生活中有很多机会学习单词,一定要珍惜这些机会。有些人整天把奔腾挂在嘴边,却不知道pent的词根含义,只知道联想、方正,不知道legend, founder,看过了《泰坦尼克》、《龙卷风》却记不住titanic, tornado 33, 喜欢玛丽亚?凯丽,却不明白diva, soprano的含义,真让人不知道说什么好。其实只要稍微留心,买花时可以学会carnation(康乃馨),喝酸奶的时候能记住yoghourt,吃冰淇淋时可以学会vanilla。
  7、故事记忆法
  记住单词是我们的唯一目标,为达目标,不择手段。如果这个方法融会贯通了,那天底一就没有记不住的单词。比如:saturnine(坐在九个骨灰盒个)canine(一狗咬九人)flaunt(飞姑姑)。这些莫名其妙的故事显得很幼稚甚至弱智,但却极为管用。
  8、做题记忆法
  最后,别忘了背单词不是为好玩,而是为了做对题。背得出五万个单词不算牛,词汇量刚到一万却总能做对题才是真的牛。不做题你永远理解不了glade和oasis有什么联系,panacea和有什么区别。
  以上所谈是一些技术上的问题。但其实背单词最重要的是有恒心。

  • Brown bears are omnivorous,eating anything that they can get their paws on.棕熊是杂食性动物,抓到什么吃什么。
  • Man is an omnivorous animal.人是肉类与蔬菜均食用的动物。
vt.推迟,拖延;vi.(to)遵从,听从,服从
  • We wish to defer our decision until next week.我们希望推迟到下星期再作出决定。
  • We will defer to whatever the committee decides.我们遵从委员会作出的任何决定。
vt.阻止,使不敢,吓住
  • Failure did not deter us from trying it again.失败并没有能阻挡我们再次进行试验。
  • Dogs can deter unwelcome intruders.狗能够阻拦不受欢迎的闯入者。
n.枯萎病;造成破坏的因素;vt.破坏,摧残
  • The apple crop was wiped out by blight.枯萎病使苹果全无收成。
  • There is a blight on all his efforts.他的一切努力都遭到挫折。
n.副业,业余爱好
  • He was a printer by trade and naturalist by avocation.他从事印刷业,同时是个博物学爱好者。
  • Learning foreign languages is just an avocation with me.学习外语只不过是我的一项业余爱好。
adj.显赫的,杰出的,有名的,优良的
  • We are expecting the arrival of an eminent scientist.我们正期待一位著名科学家的来访。
  • He is an eminent citizen of China.他是一个杰出的中国公民。
v.消除,减轻(恐惧、怀疑等)
  • The police tried to allay her fears but failed.警察力图减轻她的恐惧,但是没有收到什么效果。
  • They are trying to allay public fears about the spread of the disease.他们正竭力减轻公众对这种疾病传播的恐惧。
n.小巷,胡同;小径,小路
  • We live in the same alley.我们住在同一条小巷里。
  • The blind alley ended in a brick wall.这条死胡同的尽头是砖墙。
n.合金,(金属的)成色
  • The company produces titanium alloy.该公司生产钛合金。
  • Bronze is an alloy of copper and tin.青铜是铜和锡的合金。
n.格言,古训
  • But the old adage that men grow into office has not proved true in my experience.但是,根据我的经验,人们所谓的工作岗位造就人材这句古话并不正确。
  • Her experience lends credence to the adage " We live and learn!"她的经验印证了一句格言: 活到老,学到老!
n.寓言;童话;神话
  • The fable is given on the next page. 这篇寓言登在下一页上。
  • He had some motive in telling this fable. 他讲这寓言故事是有用意的。

  • Please lay the maxim to your heart.请把此格言记在心里。
  • "Waste not,want not" is her favourite maxim.“不浪费则不匮乏”是她喜爱的格言。

  • It is the aphorism of the Asian Games. 这是亚运会的格言。
  • Probably the aphorism that there is no easy answer to what is very complex is true. 常言道,复杂的问题无简易的答案,这话大概是真的。

  • They are playing cards to beguile the time.他们在打牌以消磨时间。
  • He used his newspapers to beguile the readers into buying shares in his company.他利用他的报纸诱骗读者买他公司的股票。
