act和action辨析
均含有“动作或行为"的意思。
act 强调动作的结果, 指单一的和个人的动作, 适用于个人力量可以完成的事, 一般属暂时性的, 如:
No act of kindness is ever wasted.
action 强调动作的方式和历程, 而且指比较复杂的动作, 需要较长时间才能完成的事
还应注意在机械和物理用语中,不能用act, 要用action, 如:the action of heat 热的作用;反之,在an act of kindness一语中, 若改为an action of kindness也是错误的。这里强调行为的结果和单一性。
v.引出,抽出,引起
- It was designed to elicit the best thinking within the government. 机构的设置是为了在政府内部集思广益。
- Don't try to elicit business secrets from me. I won't tell you anything. 你休想从我这里套问出我们的商业机密, 我什么都不会告诉你的。
