ability capability有时可以互换，但有细微区别：
①ability是做事情实际的能力
比如 the ability to walk
注意：XX的能力，用to来连接，不能用of。the ability to do,而不是the ability of doing.
√ I admire his ability to listen.
✗ I admire his ability of listening.
②capability指做某事潜在的能力及ability的极限。
例如，你说你有写好文章的ability，我可能会问你有没有在明天之前写出10页文章的capability。此外，capabilities往往是一种非此即彼的命题，而ability 往往是程度上的问题。例如，我可能会说，我虽然有写作的ability，但是我没有写小说的 capability。不过，跟这些词的其它区别一样，这些不同比较模糊，除了一般固定的用法之外，这些词都是可以互换使用的。
比如Does the company have the capability to change to meet market needs?
公司有能力改变策略，以满足市场需求吗？
③ability和capability都偏重于做事情的技能，而competence合适的中文意思为“胜任潜质”，也称为胜任素质，是指那些能带来人的高效或杰出工作绩效的潜在特征。侧重能够胜任某事的能力。
比如:He questioned the competence of the government.
他质疑政府的能力。
电影《穿普拉达的女王》中，Miranda表示不想听助手工作没有完成的借口，她说：Details of your incompetence 3 do not interest me. 你无法完成工作的那些细节，我不感兴趣。
n.能力；才能；(pl)可发展的能力或特性等
- She has the capability to become a very fine actress.她有潜力成为杰出演员。
- Organizing a whole department is beyond his capability.组织整个部门是他能力以外的事。
n.能力，胜任，称职
- This mess is a poor reflection on his competence.这种混乱情况说明他难当此任。
- These are matters within the competence of the court.这些是法院权限以内的事。
n.不胜任，不称职
- He was dismissed for incompetence. 他因不称职而被解雇。
- She felt she had been made a scapegoat for her boss's incompetence. 她觉得，本是老板无能，但她却成了替罪羊。
