New words and expressions

1. once

People are not so honest as they once were.

She was once my internet friend.

Rome was once a powerful empire.

2. temptation 1

The temptation to steal is greater than ever before — especially in large shops.

He can’t resist the temptation to cheat in the exam.

The delicious food on the table was a great temptation to the beggar 2.

3. article

The woman first bought a few small articles.

These articles are attractively wrapped.

He locked the articles of value into the safe.

4. wrap

After a little time, she chose one of the most expensive dresses in the shop and handed it to an assistant who wrapped it up for her as quickly as possible.

He wrapped his favorite books in paper.

He chose a delicately 3 wrapped perfume 4 for his girl friend.

5. simply

Then the woman simply took the parcel and walked out of the shop without paying.

He did it simply to comfort his mother.

6. arrest

When she was arrested, the detective found out that the shop assistant was her daughter.

The police arrested three young men involved in the murder.


Lesson 33

New words and expressions:

1. darkness

Out of the darkness.

Darkness was falling fast.

The yard was in darkness.

2. explain

Nearly a week passed before the girl was able to explain what had happened to her.

He explained why he was absent.

She explained that she had been held up by heavy traffic.

3. coast

One afternoon she set out from the coast in a small boat.

The boat turned over just off the coast.

There is rain over the whole of the west coast of Britain.

4. storm

She was caught in a storm.

She was overtaken 6 by a storm.

5. rock

Towards evening, the boat struck a rock and the girl jumped into the sea.

The house was built on a huge rock.

This is a dangerous course full of rocks.

6. shore

Then she swam to the shore after spending the whole night in the water.

She was found unconscious near the shore.

A lifeboat was ready to set out from the shore.

7. light

Early next morning, she saw a light ahead.

There were lights to lead you there.

He put the light out before he left.

8. ahead

The car ahead stopped suddenly and I missed the green.

They finished the work ahead of time.

9. cliff 7

She knew she was near the shore because the light was high up on the cliffs 8.

He climbed up the cliff.

The cliffs are dangerous.

10. struggle

On arriving at the shore, the girl struggled up the cliff towards the light she had seen.

He struggled to his feet.

The wolf struggled in the trap.

11. hospital

When she woke up a day later, she found herself in hospital.

He was out of hospital.

Mary has been in hospital for a month.


Lesson 34

New words and expressions:

1. station

In the letter he was asked to call at the station.

Dan wondered why he was wanted by the police, but he went to the station yesterday and now he is not worried any more.

At the station he was told by a smiling policeman that his bicycle had been found.

The local police station was attacked.

The thief was taken to the station.

2. most

Dan was most surprised when he heard the news.

The opening ceremony of the Seventeenth World Cup was most exciting.

This is the most beautiful sunset in June.


Lesson 35

News words and expressions:

1. while

A short while ago, however, he became a bus driver.

The accident occurred a while ago.

We haven’t seen each other for a long while.

2. regret

He has not regretted it.

He regretted having hurt his mother’s feelings.

He regretted that he had not followed his advice.

3. far

He is finding 9 new work far more exciting.

The house is far too expensive.

He smokes far more often than he used to.

4. rush

When he was driving along Catford Street recently, he saw two thieves rush out of a shop and run towards a waiting car.

Two mask men rushed into the bank.

He rushed out into the rain.

5. act

Roy acted quickly and drove the bus straight at the thieves.

Acting 10 on the doctor’s advice, he quit smoking.

6. straight

He went straight home after school.

He walked straight to the car parked by the roadside.

7. fright

The one with money got such a fright that he dropped the bag.

She got a fright at the sight of him.

8. battered 11

While the battered car was moving away, Roy stopped his bus and telephoned the police.

The engine was badly battered.

The door was battered.

9. shortly

Shortly afterwards, the police stopped the car and both men were arrested.

He will call you shortly.

The stores were closed shortly after seven.

10. afterwards

She wrote a letter afterwards.
