[00:00.00]Lesson 8   On being crazy (AFter W.E.B. Du Bois)
[00:29.11]  It was one o'clock and I was hungry.
[00:33.19]I found a place,seated myself,and reached for the menu.
[00:38.98]The man sitting at the other side of the table rose.
[00:43.46]  "Sir,"said he,"do you wish to force me to share the same table with you?"
[00:50.35]  "No," said I ,"I wish to eat."
[00:54.53]  "Do you understand, sir, that this is social equality 1?"
[01:00.22]  "Nothing of the sort, sir,I'm hungry--and I want to eat."
[01:06.12]  The day's work was over. I sought the theater .
[01:11.21]As I sank into my seat and leaned 2 back,
[01:15.38]the woman beside me seemed frightened and jumped up from her chair.
[01:20.76]  "Do you enjoy sitting beside me?"she asked coldly.
[01:25.85]  "Oh,no," I said.
[01:28.94]  "Well, you are not wanted here."
[01:32.83]  I was surprised."I fear you are mistaken,"I said,
[01:38.90]"I certainly like the music. And I want to listen to it."
[01:44.18]"Is social equality permitted 3 her?boy,"shouted the lady to a man showing people to their seats,
[01:51.96]"this is social equality."
[01:55.44]  "No,madam,"said the boy,"it is Beethoven's music."
[02:01.42]  After the theater,I sought the hotel.
[02:05.69]I had sent my cases there. The man there asked:
[02:11.18]  "What do you want?"
[02:14.06]  "Rest," I said.
[02:17.26]  "This is a white hotel,"he said.
[02:21.36]  I looked around.
[02:24.24]"It isn't white,such a color needs a great deal of cleaning." I said.
[02:30.22]"But I don't think I mind."
[02:33.60]  "We mind," said he.   "Then why?"
[02:38.78]  "We don't keep niggers," he said,"We don't want social equality."
[02:45.07]  "Neither do I," I replied gently. I want a bed."
[02:50.95]  I walked to the train. "I'll  take a sleeper 4 through Texas.
[02:57.24]I'm a little bit dissatisfied 5 with this town."
[03:01.73]  "We won't sell you one."
[03:05.02]  "I only want to hire it,"said I," for a couple of nights."
[03:10.42]  "Can't sell you a sleeper in Texas,"he insisted.
[03:15.22]"They consider it social equality."
[03:19.32]  "I consider it crazy," I said," I think I'll walk."
[03:25.01]  While walking I met another traveller 6.
[03:28.99]When he saw me he walked at once to the other side of the road.
[03:34.49]It was muddy 8.I asked his reason.
[03:39.38]  "Niggers are dirty," he said.
[03:42.96]  "So is mud 7," sai I ." And I am not as dirty as you, yet."
[03:49.25]  "But you're a nigger,aren't you?"
[03:52.63]  "My grandfather was so called." I admitted.
[03:57.12]  "Well then," he said proudly.
[04:00.82]  "Do you live in the South?"
[04:04.13]  "Sure,"he answered,"and suffer there."
[04:08.42]"I should think you and the negroes 9 should get together and take some action to put an end to it."
[04:15.22]  "We don't let them do that."
[04:18.62]  "We?Why not?" I said in surprise.
[04:23.02]  "Niggers know nothing about it."
[04:26.69]  "But," I said,"I don't think I know less than you do."
[04:32.38]  "But you're a nigger."
[04:35.16]  I gave up,"Go on." I said,"either you are crazy or I am."
[04:42.55]  "We both are,"he said as he walked along in the mud.
