英语课
They were here at the beginning and they turned up for the end of a trial that was often shocking and never short of controversy 1. The police had said that race wasn't relevant. It certainly became an issue. Sentencing the eight British Pakistanis and one Afghan man the judge said the victims had been treated as though they were worthless. One of the factors leading to that was the fact he said that they were not part of your community or religion.
The court had been told that gangster 2 men had preyed 3 on white girls in the L town of Haywood, in some cases, raping 4 them, in the words of the judge, callously 5, viciously, violently. Not a question of race according to Great Manchester police but simply criminality. Among those who asked whether political correctness may have played a part in the police approach to the case was the education secretary.
I didn't think the political correctness should get in the way. That's why I am pleased that the Office of the Children Commissioner 6 is conducting an inquiry 7 into every aspect of child sexual exploitation by groups and gangs. And I'm asking some tough questions about the culture background of some of these criminals.
A recent study in Rochdale street grooming 8 found that of 753 offenders 9 nearly half were of Asian heritage. The police point out that 95 percent of those on the sex offenders registering in Great Manchester are white. But a group representing young British Muslims say that of 68 recent convictions involving child exploitation 59 offenders were British Pakistani men.
In these recent issues, let's be clear about that these Asia gangs, these Asian men, these Asian criminals particularly of Pakistani origin and victims nine out of ten times white. So this is a race issue.
A tweet posted by British National Party leader Nick Griffin apparently 10 revealing verdicts before the jury had delivered them to the court has led one lawyer to lodge 11 an appeal.
In the circumstances resubmitted the impartiality 12 independence of the jury which is the cornerstone of any fair trial may have been compromised.
While the town of Haywood tries to wipe away the stain of this case, this implications are likely to reverberate 13 for months to come.
