There’re flames from England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Island, joining together to create warm at this spiritual home of the Paralympics Stoke Mandeville.
Our Paralympians and world Paralympians are now household names in the lives of many young people and that’s, that’s what the big changes have been. And that’s why it’s so important the Paralympic Games can keep nudging that story in the right direction.
In 1948, it’s the Paralympic movement was little more than archery on the lawn, a competition organized by Sir Ludwig Guttmann, a professor at Stoke Mandeville Hospital. He wanted to help World War II servicemen with spinal 1 injuries. He knew the sport was a key to their rehabilitation 2 and survival. His doctor paid tribute to him.
He will be a man’s live proud to see the Paralympic Games which will be opened in London tomorrow. Even he could not have dreamt that lighting 3 a spark in the hearts, minds and bodies of Paralympians would grow to be the amazing spectacle we’re about to witness.
